Denis Lowson

Our painter, DENIS LOWSON, whose vivid compositions have brought drama and intrigue into many lives for over sixty years was a unique and constant spirit during changing periods of abstraction and generalisation.

After studying at the Slade in the early nineteen fifties he painted with unfailing passion and dedication. Being a romantic idealist he consistently refused to follow modish movements, his unswerving inspirations being literature, theatre, people and performance. Equally significant was the desire to record transient events of history – a personal record of his taking part in the celebration of many cultures; of being there.

Years of extensive travel, with his wife, Marja, found him painting live events, in places such as Haiti, Dominica, Mexico, Malaysia and America. Unfailingly he returned home, to Swanage, with wonderfully optimistic stories of native generosity and kindnesses – a sure reflection of his own personality, transmitted through his work.

A humanist, he practiced Yoga and daily meditation, kept his journals and studied poetry; when selling a painting he was equally happy with the pleasure given to a buyer as the financial reward received. Such an approach gave rise to a legion of appreciative friends and patrons in many countries but it is only now that we are able to offer his work to a much wider audience.

You will find, in his work, a warm celebration of life, nature and art that is rare and very English in its essence. Please enjoy this current selection of paintings whilst keeping watch on the site for regular updates.
